Brazil Rallies Past Japan to Reach VNL Semifinals
Brazil recovered after losing the opening set to defeat Japan 3-1 and advance to the VNL semifinals, where the South American side will meet defending champion Italy.
Brazil secured its place in the 2026 Women’s Volleyball Nations League semifinals after coming from behind to defeat Japan 3-1 in Macao. After dropping a closely contested opening set, the South American team turned the match around to win 24-26, 25-22, 25-16, 25-20.
Japan took the first set by the narrowest of margins, but Brazil responded immediately by leveling the match in the second. The third set was dominated by Brazil, while the fourth remained even until 19-19 before Brazil produced a decisive run to seal the victory.
Ana Cristina delivered an outstanding performance with a match-high 30 points. Julia Bergmann added 24, and Rosamaria Montibeller contributed 12. Brazil also finished ahead in every major scoring category, recording 63 attack points, 15 blocks and six aces.
For Japan, Yukiko Wada led the team with 19 points, while captain Mayu Ishikawa scored 15 and Yoshino Sato added 12.
The victory sends Brazil into its seventh VNL semifinal, where it will face defending champion Italy on July 25. Italy advanced after defeating the Netherlands in straight sets.
