Brazil Names 16-Player Squad Ahead of South American Championship

Brazil head coach Bernardinho has called up 16 players for training camps ahead of the South American Championship, a qualifier for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Brazil begins a sequence of international commitments this Sunday, August 16, with trips to Japan, Italy, and France.

The squad is largely based on Brazil's most recent Nations League roster, with the addition of Lukas Bergmann, who has recovered from a back injury. The list includes opposites Darlan and Bryan; outside hitters Lucarelli, Adriano, Honorato, Arthur Bento, Lukas Bergmann, and Douglas Souza; middle blockers Flavio, Judson, Pinta, and Barreto; and liberos Maique and Pureza.

On Sunday, the team travels to Japan with 15 athletes, as Douglas Souza will remain training in Brazil. In Japan, Brazil will play two friendly matches against the host nation. The squad will then travel to Italy to compete in the Fipav Cup Men Elite, alongside Italy, Cuba, and Germany. From there, the delegation continues to France for friendly matches against the French national team.

Following this international stretch, the team will return to Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, for the final phase of preparation ahead of the South American Championship, to be played at Maracanãzinho in Rio de Janeiro from September 15 to 20. Brazil's broader roster for the South American Championship includes 20 players; beyond the 16 named for the training and international sequence, setter Bieler, opposite Chizoba, outside hitter Maicon, and middle blocker Yan are also part of the extended squad.
